A Message from our UMW President

Hi, I’m Kim Spears, the President of the United Methodist Women’s Group here at Rocky Ridge. Along with Cory Spears, Treasurer, and Denise Bass, Secretary, we welcome you to our webpage. The UMW meet as a group every quarter to discuss budgets, have programs and devotions, discuss fundraisers and have refreshments. Many times, we have themes or speakers. These meetings are the first Monday of February, May, August and November at 7 pm. We also meet monthly in groups called circles. Circle 2
meets in the mornings and Circle 3 meets in the evenings (7 pm). These meetings are held the second Monday of every month. You are welcome to join us at any of these meetings. You don’t have to “be a member” and they are very casual. We also have an annual Christmas party the first Monday in December at 7 pm.

RRUMC UMW is part of a unit (Metro District) which is part of a conference (Western NC), which is part of the overall United Methodist Church’s UMW. We usually get together at a district level for prayer breakfasts and trainings. We get together as a conference for retreats, mission studies and projects (however, we do projects at every level).

Another part of our UMW is our reading program, which encourages us all to read books from sources regarding the parameters of Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action and Spiritual Growth. The program is also available for children. The UMW sponsors scholarships and supports UMC programs, such as Bethlehem Center, a childcare
facility, and Brooks-Howell - a retirement home, along with our contribution to our church conference.

The UMW is also leading in awareness in such issues as:Just Energy for All: Climate Justice; Interrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline: Criminalization of Communities of Color and Mass Incarceration; A Living Wage for All: Economic Inequality; End Maternal Mortality: Maternal and Child Health.

Our UMW does outreach to our shut-ins with monthly cards, sponsors bereavement meals for families in our church who have lost loved ones, and sponsors local school Bible classes. We give to our community through food pantries, meals for the homeless, school supplies, Meals on Wheels, foster parents, the children’s home, Hospice, mission trips and projects, and making desserts for our very own hot dog sales.

Again, I would like to personally invite you to join us at one of our meetings for food, fun and fellowship!
